Service - Habitat for Humanity

Activity: Building a House in Braga
Type of Activity: Service
Number of Hours: 63

One of the best memories I have from my time in St. Dominic's is going to Braga with around 20 people from my year and the year below, to help building a house for a less fortunate family. We slept in the youth hostel of Braga, where we shared a room with 9 other girls which was great fun. However, we did not take much advantage of this as we were extremely tired at the end of each day, and went to sleep as soon as we hit the beds.
The building of the house was a lot harder than I initially expected because we had to put cement on the walls and make it as smooth as possible, though the technique for doing so consisted of simply "throwing" the cement on the walls using a shovel only. In the beginning, about half of the cement fell on the floor while doing so, but as time passed, we got better at it and the cement would actually stick to the walls in a smooth way. Other things we did while we were in Braga was the making of the cement itself, and sieving the sand outside to remove rocks from the sand. This sand, without any impurities, would then be used to make the cement. It was hard work, but seeing the smiles on the peoples' faces was truly satisfying and made us feel very good about what we were doing, and made us conscious of our aims pushing us to work even harder. I am very glad I got to be part of this event, and it was definitely a life-changing experience, since I got to see how different the living conditions of people are that live in the same country as me, but have a life that is completely different from ours, without a house to sleep in or proper food to eat.
