Activity: Helping Out in UN Day
Type of Activity: Service
Number of Hours: 5
Every year, St. Dominic's organizes a UN day where people from all over the world come together to show each other traditions from their own country, bring food from their own country, and to just teach the children about their culture. I helped out on the Dutch section and helped distributing the food, including Dutch candy, cookies and a variety of other things, and helped children play Dutch games, such as "Sjoelen" and "Zakkenlopen". I could tell that the children really enjoyed playing these games, and it was very interesting to see how much children from international schools like St. Dominic's know about other cultures, whereas you wouldn't see this in schools that I used to be in when I lived in Holland. It made me feel truly blessed to be brought up in International Schools learning about cultures, and I think the UN day is a great initiative to develop these concepts.
When most people had left, I helped to clean up which was a lot of work since all the tables had to be brought back to the classrooms, all the other things had to be brought to the car, and all the rubbish had to be picked up from the floor. Despite this, it was a lovely afternoon because we had music blasting out of the speakers making the cleaning up a lot more fun.
